WHAT IS SFP PROGRAMME?
The Science Foundation Programme

This option has been part of the Science Foundation Programme offered at the Pietermaritzburg and Westville campuses. It is a one year access programme for students from disadvantaged schools who are interested in a science degree but do not meet the entry requirements for it and do not have a matriculation exemption. Those who are admitted are provided with a full year of foundational pre-university level modules, which currently include Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Communication in Science. In addition, as in the BSc4 (Foundation) programme, concerted attention is given to science literacy, and the programme places a particular emphasis on developing the study and life skills of students, so providing a solid grounding for their future studies.

The criteria for admission are:

  • Applicants must be from a disadvantaged school
  • Senior Certificate (matric exemption not required)
  • At least 20 matric points
  • Standard Grade F for Mathematics
  • Standard Grade F for Physical Science, Biology or Agricultural Science
  • Good performance on selection tests in Mathematics, Science and English
